It’s an exciting time here at Crown of Life!  We’ve welcomed Pastor Martin Richardson to our church family over the past few weeks and this week we introduce Vicar Steve Sandfort to our staff.  Vicar Steve will be working with us here at Crown of Life while he also looks to plant a church outside our community.   This week also brought us two new Assistant Directors of Children and Youth Ministry.  Shannon Davis and Matt Compton will be working part time with our children’s and youth program helping to make it the best it’s ever been.  Our school has added their share of new people as well.  We welcome Dr. Andra Barton as the Interim Principal and teachers Rebekah Tinsman, Ann Jung and Ellen Malzahn.

Meeting new people is like a breath of fresh air.  It is exciting to see the joy and gifts they bring to a team,  class, workplace, family or ministry.  As the school year begins may we be open to introducing ourselves to others we may not know.  May we pray for the courage, strength, and words to say to introduce those who may not know the Lord to our Savior.  Let’s focus on introducing our friends to others and inviting our friends to church and the events that take place there.

Ahhh Freedom!

Upon hearing a wonderful message from Colonel Grant Olbrich during our church’s Fourthof July celebration service I was inspired to contemplate the freedoms we experience in our country as a result of those who put themselves in harms way and to reflect on the freedom we have in Christ who laid down his life in order that sin and death would not keep us in chains any more.

Freedom is experienced in lots of ways.  Taking a break from school offers freedom from homework.  Those who turn certain magical ages become free to drive, vote, and be on their own to make more free choices for themselves.

Being free can be comforting and scary at the same time.  When our parents give us the freedom to choose the activities we wish to participate in, it can be a time of excitement as well as overwhelming.  I remember entering high school, the age when one could actually be a part of our church’s youth group, and having the freedom to choose whether or not to be a part of that ministry.  As I reflect on the decision I made to be an active participant and leader of that group, I feel a sense of blessing.  The Christian friends and adult leaders that I interacted with during those years were some of the most influential people in my life.  The opportunities I had to serve  and lead others through that ministry prepared me for what I am doing with my Calling and in my family to this day.

With the freedom to choose so many things these days I want to be clear that Jesus freely chose you and me to be a part of his family.  Jesus freely chose to die for our sin.  Through his blessed death and awesome resurrection we are free from sin, death and the power of the devil.  Each day we are free to make many choices.  My prayer is that you and I, through the power of the Holy Spirit, choose to live as Christ intended by loving him and those around us.

ANNOUNCEMENTS & REMINDERS

* Highway 912 youth are invited to be a part of our summer Bible study series called Splitting Image which is held the 1st and 4th Wednesdays over the summer.  Join us as we explore how and why God created us the way he did and stay for more fun as we play games together.  The Bible study and games runs from 6:00-8:30 pm.

* Highway 912 youth (high school) are invited to be a part of a special Trading Spaces event on Wednesday, July 7 from 1-5:30 pm as Ben and Betty switch offices.  The youth can help make the move a fun one while adding their personal touches to the office spaces.  Dinner will be provided from 5:30-6:00 pm.  Join us!

* Students attending the National Youth Gathering in New Orleans are reminded to turn in their medical and covenant forms and meet ready to go at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Carrollton at 8:00 pm on Friday, July 16th.

Summer at Last!

The end of the school year brings out many different emotions.  For those who are graduating there may be a sense of  accomplishment as the years of work have finally paid off and they can head on to the next stage in their lives.  For some the end of school may bring sorrow as teachers, classmates, and friends may be missed because of a parting of ways.  Still for others there is just elation as the summer brings the opportunity to sleep in, no homework, and more free time to enjoy.  As emotions can vary and differ from person to person or moment to moment with the change of seasons, one thing that never changes is God.  His love for us never fades.  His grace is always present.  His concern for us never goes away.

Even though summer is a time to take a break from many things, I encourage you not to take a break from God.  He still wants a relationship with you.  He wants you to continue to grow closer to him as you learn more about him.  His desire for you is to love and serve others as you love and serve him-all year long.

At Crown of Life there are still many opportunities to know Jesus and his love, grow in Jesus and his love, and show Jesus and his love to others throughout the summer.  Be sure to set aside time for God this summer at church, home or in your community.

Over the month of April many rains fell on the youth at Crown of Life.  For some, the hardship of life felt like a downpour which seemed to drown their very existence.  For others, their lives encountered the healing rains of revitalization in their faith and walk with Christ.  And still to others, they experienced literal rain during their confirmation retreat.

Through all the rain April still brought us a joyful celebration of Easter, a successful 8th grade night at Teen Community Bible Study, a wet and wonderful Expozure Confirmation Retreat, SALT team retreat planning, our exciting monthly Birthday Bash, meaningful Bible study classes and finally the month was topped off with an awesome Stellar Kart Concert that is still ringing in our ears.  The showers of blessings in April will certainly bring forth many “flowers” of blessing in the month of May as we celebrate the confirmation of twenty-one students, honor our mothers,  reach out to invite 90 friends to play laser tag, and serve food to the residents of Union Gospel Mission.

ANNOUNCEMENTS & REMINDERS

* On May 16th those in the senior class will be honored for their accomplishments with a special dinner for them and their families.  Every Highway 912 youth member is also invited to this event which will take place in the EDGE Event Center from 6:00 – 7:30 PM.

*  A S.A.L.T. (Students Actively Leading Together) team meeting takes place on Sunday, May 16th from 3-5 PM.  Students looking to join this group of student leaders are asked to talk to Ben about getting started in the application process.

* Highway 912 youth will be serving meals to the residents at Union Gospel Mission in downtown Fort Worth on Sunday, May 30th.  We’ll be leaving COL at 3:00 PM and returning to COL at about 8:00 PM.  There are only 6 more spots available as of this writing.  Interested students should sign up on the H-912 bulletin board in the EDGE hallway.

* National Youth Gathering Meeting /Bible Study #2 takes place on Wednesday, May 19th from 7:00-8:30 PM.  We’ll begin in the EDGE Cafe.

Easter Service

Written by admin. No comments Posted in: News from the EDGE

bscheck-2

As we approach Eastertime I get the feeling that many people view Easter service as simply an event we attend. We dress in new clothes and sing praises to our God for raising his son Jesus from the dead so that we are assured that we will rise with him someday and enjoy the glory of heaven.  It is a time when the brass comes to the forefront of the musical display and we have many options as to which particular service will fulfill us the most.  Easter service certainly is these things, but over the past week I’ve seen Easter service in a new light.

This past Saturday,  fifteen high schoolers and adults served their community by sharing the Gospel through drama and word to over forty residents of the Courtyards apartments.  Following the drama they led all the children through an Easter egg hunt and passed out a number of Spanish and English Bibles to families.

On the same day twenty-five people gathered at the church to serve by beautifying the church grounds and performing other needed tasks during our church work day.

The next day, members from the Innerstate 56 youthgroup served many people as they made their way through a contemplative journey to the cross with the guidance and direction of the youth.

I also came across picture  in the Star-Telegram on Sunday that showed two of our high school girls who, with their Girl Scout Troop, stuffed 250 bears and wrote encouraging notes for children in Haiti.

It is amazing that in just a few days time something so incredible could be done to serve others.  The reason behind all of this service, I would argue, comes from having a relationship with the Easter Jesus.  In just a few days time, from the time of his death on the cross to his glorious resurrection, he turned the world upside down.  Knowing what Jesus did for us in service compels us to do the same for others.  Easter service isn’t just something that happens once a year.  Easter service takes place anytime one serves another in God’s name and withhis love.  I pray that your Easter is filled with service.

Takin’ a Break

It’s Spring Break and everyone spends their time in their own unique way.  As I sit here in my office I sense a peaceful quiet that doesn’t often take place in our church and school building.  Yet it provides me with some calming time to gather my thoughts and focus on the ministry before me.  Some people vacation and fill their time with wild adventures while others prefer peaceful times reading books.  Spring Break is a time when students get to take a break from the busyness of schoolwork and activity.  It is a time to rest and rejuvenate as the end of the school year draws near.

We know that God took a break from all his work in creation as he rested on the seventh day. Even Jesus needed a break from time to time.  His public ministry only lasted three years, but what he packed into those years was amazing and certainly tiring!  In the first chapter of Mark we see Jesus healing people left and right from sickness and demons.  Then in verse 35 we read, “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”  Jesus took a break.  How and where he spent his time is very revealing and sets a great example for us to follow.  Jesus went by himself to pray.  He spent time with his father in heaven in conversation.

Taking a break from school, work, sports, activities, and even friends is healthy, but taking a break from God isn’t.  Hopefully we all take a little time to be still by ourselves and talk to our heavenly father.  God is our true source of joy, hope and love.  Time with him is never wasted.

It was that special time of year again when a certain energy fills the Jr. high students to the point of almost bursting.  This certain energy which comes from a combination of the Holy Spirit, Mountain Dew, and hormones is what gets these kids so excited about Youth Quake. The Quake is a weekend retreat filled with engaging speakers, powerful worship and more fun than riding the Titan over and over and over.

This year’s theme was Do.Love.Walk. based on Micah 6:8 which says, “He has showed you, O man, what is good.  And what does the LORD require of you?  To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”  This verse and the messages that flowed from this verse have inspired middle schoolers and adults alike to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.  Coming away from this memorable weekend has stirred our hearts to reach out to those who need our love and to share with them God’s love.

Some memorable moments from the weekend those who attended will not soon forget include, “Stacy!”, nunchucks, crazy dress night, donuts in the toilet, the mall, sprinkle sunshine on each other, the high dive, giant jaw breakers, chewbacca mask, hair extensions, and sleeping in chairs.  What a great time we had.  We can’t wait till next year!

God Provides

Rewind to Saturday afternoon and you’ll see me and my wife getting into our car discussing  how we are going to spend the small sum of money we just received for signing off on our gas and oil lease on our property.  The amount is about a fifth of what it would have been had we signed the lease agreement before the economy went south, but it was still more than we had when we got into the car to go to the signing location.  Not much thought went into how the money was going to be spent or saved until we woke up the next day.

On Sunday morning we woke up to the joy and wonder of a flooded upstairs bathroom and leaks in two different locations downstairs.  Apparently a couple of soaking golf balls in serious need of cleaning were the reason the sink was plugged.  The faucet was left running and the rest is history.

You see God provided for our family as He always does.  It’s just that we don’t always see it.  Receiving a check just hours before some unintended remodeling plans take place is just one of the ways God provides.  Sometimes he acts in advance, like in this situation, and sometimes he waits.  Either way his timing is always right, his provision is always there, and his love never fails.  The next time you receive words of encouragement, an unexpected hug, or a mysterious blessing, stop and think how God may be using that to lift you up and share his love and provision with you.

Jesus Loves Me!

Around Valentine’s Day many who are hurting might be thinking, “Jesus loves me?”  That question mark says so much.  People who question Jesus’ love for them may not feel worthy of that love or may be so spiritually, emotionally, and mentally drained that they begin to doubt those three simple words.

There are some who say to themselves, “Jesus loves me.”  They know this to be a fact, a statement.  Saying that to yourself may get you through the day, but it may not offer you any kind of excitement or feelings of joy.  For many it is easy to know that Jesus loves them, but it is just as easy to get caught up in lots of other statements during the course of the day as well like; “My homework is due tomorrow,” or “I can’t believe I’m grounded again,” or “I’m pretty sure my teacher is wearing a toupee.”

When we look at scripture and the message that Jesus shares with us through His word and through His actions on the cross, there can be no doubt that He intended us to say, “Jesus loves me!”  That phrase is really nothing short of a genuine exclamation.  In John chapter 15 Jesus shares these words with us, “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you…Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends…You did not choose me, but I chose you…”  Jesus’ love for us is extreme.  He wants us to exclaim that love and pour it out onto others.  May the love of Jesus fill me and you with so much joy that we never hesitate to say, “Jesus loves me!”

Super Sunday!

OK, so this past Super Bowl Sunday doesn’t quite compare to the joy of Easter Sunday, but it did offer many joys of its own for the youth of our church and community and to those who cheered for the Saints.

Before the Super Bowl even began the Innerstate 78 youthgroup met for yet another edition of Surviving Middle School, a monthly Bible study geared for junior high aged students who could use a little insight and support for getting through some of the most joyous and painful years of life.  The theme for this month’s Bible study dealt with handling authority.  Students had a blast playing the role given to them as royalty, noblemen, knights, craftsmen, and peasants.  With each role came responsibility and accountability which was sometimes abused and sometimes dealt with appropriately.  Through this activity many witnessed the abuse suffered as many authorities had their way with those subject to them by making them dance, do push ups, fetch them food, and play them music.  Through the Bible study students discovered that’s the way it is with us today as well.  There is always someone in authority over us be it parents, teachers, government, etc.  God’s word speaks about respecting authority even though it is sometimes misused.  We came away from our time together knowing that we are all subject to God’s authority which is perfect and right in every way.  We can follow his example of using authority as we think about responsibilities we’ll have in the future.

Later that day our Highway 912 and Innerstate 78 groups got together for some fun as we watched the Super Bowl and played together Sunday night.  Each person was able to find joy one way or another as they had a lot of activities to choose from.  Some watched the game intently while others waited for the famous Super Bowl commercials.  Some climbed the rock wall while others took on the Star Wars video game.  Many played ball in the gym while others were content to play cards or chess.  Everyone had a fair share of food as there was a smorgasbord of plentiful food just crying to be eaten.  Through all that excitement some cheered as the Saints pulled off the upset while others sorrowfully swallowed the distasteful pill of defeat for the Colts.  Hopefully all found some joy, one way or another, by the time they had together.  It was in fact a super Sunday!

Girls, grab your dads and get ready for a fantastic event.  The Daddy Daughter Sock Hop will be held in the EDGE event center on Friday, February 26th from 6:30-8:30 pm.  Have fun dressing up and enjoy getting a special picture taken with the two of you, drinks from the soda fountain, and a blast dancing as we have a professional DJ leading all the way.  Sign up for this FREE event at www.crownoflife.org

* Innerstate 78 youth and parents have the opportunity to serve at GRACE’s Donation Station from 3-5 pm on Saturday, February 20th.  Look for flyers in your e-mail.

* Looking for a job?  If you are a high school student and a responsible driver, there are two opportunities for work from members of our congregation.   One is  looking to hire a part-time food delivery person ($10+/hour).  The other is looking for someone to care for their 2 children 2-3 times a week from 3:30/4:00-7 pm.  If you have interest in either position, please contact Ben at 817-421-5683 or e-mail at bscheck@crownoflife.org for contact information.

* Attention Innerstate 78 Youth: We have exactly one spot available for the Dallas Quake.  The first to contact me will be able to pay the standard rate of $170 rather than the late rate of $180 and will get a free t-shirt.  Contact  Ben directly at 817-421-5683 or e-mail at bscheck@crownoflife.org.  The Quake is held from March 5-7 at the Marriott DFW Airport North Hotel.

* There is a special Dallas Quake pre-event Bible studya and meeting for all those attending the Quake.  This meeting will take place on Sunday, Feb. 28 from 12-2 pm in the EDGE cafe.  Get all the information about the upcoming event and get a free lunch as well!
